Shell size:
Shells at least 12cm (4.5") across.
Description & Application:
Fascinatingly delicate, natural sea urchin shell, hand dived from Atlantic Waters and cleaned with care in our Cornish workshop.
Urchins which are related to sand dollars and starfish (sea-stars) are found in many environments throughout the oceans of the world and in depths of water over 1000meteres. These unique and colourful shells demonstrate a distinctive five fold symmetry, which is characteristic of the species and can be found as fossils in rocks dating back to the Ordovician 400 million years ago.
These specimens are found in the Western Approaches to the English Channel and are a much sought after collectors item world wide.
Classification:
Echinus esculentus
