Background: : These fan like shells named after their resemblance to old fashioned quill pens, live in calm warm seas with their narrow ends buried in the sand and anchored by thin threads or byssus to stable rocks. Byssus was once woven into a fine cloth known as "cloth of gold". The shells are an important food source in many parts of the world and occasionally produce black diamonds.
