We do not sell giant clams as the conservation status of the shell is classed as "Vulnerable", however, for window displays, table decoration and event assignments these beautifully made and polished resin shells are an excellent copy.

Composition: Shells are manufactured from resin bound compressed capiz shells formed into a strong and watertight giant clam shape

Fact File: Giant clams are the largest mollusks on the planet, growing to over 1 metre in length and weighing up to 1/4 tonne. The average life-span can be over 100 years.

In spite of their proportions they thrive by consuming sugars and proteins produced by algae living within their tissues, together with plankton filtered through a siphon.

Giant clams have an undeserved reputation of being man-eaters, however, no fatality has ever been substantiated, and researches have now established that the adductor muscle used to close the shell moves far too slowly to take a swimmer by surprise.

Conservation: Developments in aqua-culture, principally in Florida, USA are allowing for Giant Clams to be raised commercially and to be released back into the wild.
