Description and Application:
The New Zealand Paua is not only a Maori shellfish delicacy but is the most spectacularly coloured of the family of Abalone shells. Varieties of Abalone are also found through, Australia, South Africa and the east coast of America. They are characterised by a low spiral shell and an iridescent mother of pearl interior.
Once polished the colour of the Paua shell changes when viewed at different angles, this being a factor of light being defracted within the crystal lattice of the shell similar to the irridescent effect in opals.
Fishing for paua (and other species of Abalone) is carried out under strict licence with restrictions on scuba diving, and the number and size of shells collected.
The holes in the shells are for breathing and reproduction. Starfish are major preditors, and have learnt to put their tenticles over the holes and force the paua to submit through suffocation.
