This facinating and ornate white paper-thin "shell" which in spite of its common name, is not related to the Nautilus family but is in fact the extruded egg case of the female argonaut octopus. These "shells" which are composed of calcite (Calcium carbonate) are found in warm waters from the Asia-Pacific right through to the Mediterranean.

Unlike many octopuses which lay their eggs in caves and crevices, the argonaut lives near the surface, hence the excreated nautilus-like shell provides a floating chamber for the animals' young. The discarded shells are frequently found floating and washed up on beaches.
