Shell size: Generally between 5-7.5cm in length.

Cleaned natural oyster shell for crafts and interior/exterior decoration. The shells as supplied contain both cups and flats but not as matched pairs.
Whilst these shells are sourced from within Europe they are in fact the Pacific (Japanese) Oyster which has been introduced for cultivation.

Our clients have used these shells as a natural pH buffer in ponds, however, we would recommend to further thoroughly clean the shells prior to introduction.

Background: Oysters are bivalve mollusks which live by filtering plankton in marine and brakish waters. Many varieties of oyster are prized foods being rich in zinc and other minerals.

Oysters in Hstory: Whitstable in Kent has been noted for its Oyster beds since Roman Times. Not only did the Romans eat the meat but the shells were burnt to form a very effective cement.

In the 19th Century oysters were seen as a cheap food by the working classes.
